Overview

Applied kinesiology is a chiropractic technique used to diagnose and treat medical conditions. It was developed by the chiropractor George Goodheart. Applied kinesiology should not be confused with kinesiotherapy or general kinesiology, which does not claim to diagnose or treat disease.

Applied kinesiology is used for breast pain (mastalgia), developmental delay disorders in children, and other conditions. However, there is no reliable scientific evidence that applied kinesiology is an accurate indicator of medical conditions or disease.

Likely InEffective for

  • Diagnosing a disease. Most research shows that applied kinesiology does not reliably identify or diagnose disease.

Insufficient Evidence for

  • Child development. Early research shows that chiropractic treatment with applied kinesiology might improve mental function in children with developmental delay disorders. But it is not clear if this change is due to a "placebo effect".
  • A learning disorder marked by difficulty reading (dyslexia). Early research shows that applied kinesiology along with other treatments might improve self-esteem in children with dyslexia. But there is mixed evidence whether it helps with learning in these children.
  • Breast pain (mastalgia). Early research shows that applied kinesiology treatments might reduce breast pain in women with this problem. But it is not clear if this is from a "placebo effect".
  • Other conditions.

More evidence is needed to rate the effectiveness of applied kinesiology for these uses.

Special Precautions and Warnings



Applied kinesiology is POSSIBLY SAFE and there are no known safety concerns when it is used appropriately. However, applied kinesiology should not be relied on to identify or diagnose medical conditions in place of modern diagnostic techniques. This might lead to delays in diagnosis and treatment.

Pregnancy and breast-feeding: Not enough is known about the use of applied kinesiology during pregnancy and breast-feeding. Stay on the safe side and avoid use.
