How Do You Explain That Your Migraine Is More Than “Just a Headache”?

Migraines impact more than 39 million people in the US, though less than 50% ever receive a diagnosis and only 12% receive preventive treatment. While a headache is the main symptom of a migraine, it's rarely the only one. Other symptoms include:

  • Nausea
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Dizziness
  • Fatigue

If you’ve ever heard “it’s just a headache,” you likely understand the frustration of having to explain your migraines. You’re not obligated to explain your condition, but you may feel compelled to. What are some things you've told people who have never had a migraine?

  • Did you explain that it’s a neurological condition connected to genetics?
  • Did you list the symptoms of migraines apart from headaches?
  • Were you open to discussing what the pain felt like or how often your migraines happen?
